Guildford Open Fita 25m
(A report by Eleanor)

Following numerous hints about how well SGB would do at various competitions if only they had a full team, and with no team attending from her affiliation club, London Archers, Eleanor became a team member for the day; she does after all qualify as a Scottish graduate, having been a member of the dark hordes of Edinburgh for four years before moving south in stages and ending up in the murky world of corporate law in the Village. SGB regular stalwarts Ian and Paul also made the trip to darkest Surrey for this shoot.

Ian, having set off at the crack of dawn (well, about half seven) with a car load of Imperials in tow, started the SGB campaign well with a score of 557, leading the morning session and taking the notable scalp of Jeff Bond. In the end, Ian was narrowly edged for overall victory by Paul Tooley of Spelthorne, finishing second. Tim Sheldon of Imperial also shot well, finishing on a score of 535, gaining him a place in the eventual top ten, as did Mati Lang of ULU, shooting 512 and finishing a tantalising fourth at the end of the day. The ladies' category was won with an impressive 539 from Josie Chandlor of Forest of Bere.

The afternoon saw Paul, Eleanor and Dave Spinner of London Archers take the floor, with mixed success. Paul shot well, finishing on 547 and in seventh place, Dave, shooting compound, shot a frustrating 557 to finish fourth in his category, and Eleanor put in a highly variable 500 for SGB's third team score, shooting on her birthday. The team finished with a creditable score of 1604, enough for second place but annoyingly close to Burleigh's winning score of 1619.

After the shoot the real drama began, with the party for Paul's car arriving back in the car park to find that a window had been smashed. A long and chilly wait ensued for some as sports centre staff, police, insurers and repairers were all contacted. All finally made it back to town, where belated but appreciated drinks were had for Eleanor's birthday.
